AMY GRANT Tennessee Christmas

Our family was excited to receive a review copy of AMY GRANT Tennessee Christmas. We own Amy Grant's other Christmas CDs, including her first, "A Christmas Album" in two formats (we had to upgrade it to CD from cassette at one point).

Right off the bat, first song, the album is like an old friend walking through the front door, with Tennessee Christmas, warm and familiar, yet slightly updated. And like that album we love and still play from 1983, AMY GRANT Tennessee Christmas,
gives listeners a variety of songs and styles, from classics to brand new and sacred to secular. Some songs have what I would describe as a light jazzy arrangement. (My daughter who is a music major will cringe at that description, but she is not home yet from college to give me a better term. Oh, and Amy & Vince, if you ever need a French horn player for your next Christmas projects, I can hook you up with a great one, and she attends college near the Music City.)

Hubby and I are listening to the album again as I gather my thoughts for this blog post. He's really picky about Christmas music. And he gives this one two thumbs up He is reading the album liner notes beginning to end and reading bits and pieces to me. And he's quizzing me. "Who wrote this?" "Well, dear, I am pretty sure Irving Berlin wrote White Christmas." (Hubby 0. Me 1.) He tells me that Grant has never performed "Joy To The World" so slowly and it allowed her to really focus on the meaning of the words. And hubby agrees with her. He's not usually a fan of slower songs, and yet he really likes this one. And he likes the way the softer instrumentals do not overpower Grant's voice.

The album makes us both want to hear Grant live again. We saw her once, at the Hollywood Bowl in the 90's, when she was in concert with SCC.

I had grand plans to listen to this CD while out and about, running errands. I love a good sing along, and in the car, alone, I am quite good. *wink* But I have been stuck at home for over a week with an upper respiratory bug, not able to join in and sing because any attempt to vocalize (spoken or in song) would send me into a big coughing fit. Forced to simply listen this time, Amy Grant is a joy, as always. And by the time my voice is healed enough to sing along, I will know most of the words. Bonus!

Amy Grant and her team are asking fans to upload any videos they may have of them surprising loved ones for the holidays to social media using the hashtag #TNChristmasSurprise! . They will be making a compilation video similar to this one and posting it to Amy’s socials – this specific video has not been announced yet though.

You can buy AMY GRANT Tennessee Christmas here. You  know you want a copy. And until you own yours, enjoy this cut from the CD:

Merry Christmas!

I was given a copy of the AMY GRANT Tennessee Christmas in exchange for a review on my blog. I am not obligated to provide a positive review.

GrubMarket Review

GrubMarket - Organic for the 99%

My family got to review a box from GrubMarket. GrubMarket allows you to simply log on and order what you want. No subscriptions required. Yes, they offer subscriptions, but you are not tied in to a subscription if you choose not to be. They offer free shipping when you order more than $49. (Orders $49 and under have a $7 delivery fee.)

Here's what we got:

A pineapple, a grapefruit, an orange, a pomegranate, a couple of pears, a couple of apples, an avocado, and a package of dates. The fruit was well packed in crinkly shredded paper and the delicate fruits were wrapped in little sheets of paper.

I am experiencing some histamine intolerance issues and cannot eat the pineapple or citrus or the avocado and left them for hubby and the kids. The food is fresh, arrived packed well, and is nice to look at. No rotten pieces or brown fruit. Very appealing and tasty. The organic dates are my favorite! I live in "Podunk" where organic produce can be difficult to find, especially in the winter. I love that I had this delivered right to my front door.

Browsing the web site makes me hungry. The cheddar cauliflower, yellow squash, and organic apples look delicious. GrubMarket has home goods, baby items, pet supplies, a very wide variety. I am happy to know about them.

If you'd like to order, use the code GRUB20 for 20% off your first order.

Yes, I will order. I am eyeing the college box with anticipation. That will be a great box to send for finals week. There are gluten free products

GrubMarket is on Facebook here. Follow GrubMarket on twitter, here.

Adore Chris Tomlin Christmas Songs of Worship CD Review & Giveaway

http://christomlin.com/adore
Christmas music is my favorite music. I make no secret of the fact that I am a fan of the radio station in Michigan that begins playing Christmas music, November 1st. When I was given the opportunity to review Adore, I said "Yes, please!"

This CD is filled with gentle, worshipful songs from beginning to end. Sometimes, I want to hear some rockin' Christmas songs and sometimes I want to focus on worship and this is the CD to play when I want to focus on worship. The CD features all sacred songs, some classics, some new. I find that Adore is excellent for setting the mood for intentional worship (even in the car), great background music for a daily Bible reading, or during a chaotic time, for refocusing my mind on the important stuff.

Songs:
1. He Shall Reign Forevermore
2. Adore
3. Midnight Clear (Love Song)
4. Noel featuring Lauren Daigle
5. Hymn Of Joy
6. Silent Night featuring Kristyn Getty
7. What Child Is This? featuring Sons & Daughters
8. It's Christmas
9. A King Like This
10. Bethlehem
11. A Christmas Alleluia featuring Lauren Daigle & Leslie Jordan of All Sons & Daughters
The music transports me to the sanctuary of my home church where I grew up. Candlelight Christmas Eve services were beautiful and moving and really set the focus for the holiday. I miss that. I ache for it. I have a child on the autism spectrum who does not do well in the sanctuary of a church. Too loud, too crowded, too sensory overload. Christmas Eve services are out for us as a family because of that. I miss going to a Christmas Eve service and I still grieve that dream. However, as I listen again and again to Adore, I know that I can play this on Christmas Eve and have a service at home. Adore is beautiful.

Click on the photo to go to the Chris Tomlin official web site. Chris Tomlin's music is on Facebook, twitter, Instagram, YouTube (where you can see and hear some of the album), and while I prefer an actual CD, buyers may download from iTunes as well.

Mercy Me It's Christmas! review and giveaway

http://www.pizzaranch.com/music/mercyme/

My homeschooler and I have been listening to Mercy Me It's Christmas! in the car and I am ready to put up the Christmas tree and decorations!

When I was a child, I loved the moments in December after dark when my mother would plug in the lights on the Christmas tree and play Christmas albums on the turntable. There was something magical about those moments and my mind still wanders back there when I hear Christmas tunes on the radio.

I love Christmas music. When my husband and I lived in Michigan, I tuned my radio to the station that switched to Christmas music every November 1st. Oh yes! I am not one of those who has the rule that Christmas music must wait until after Thanksgiving.

I have a thing about Christmas music CDs. I prefer CDs that offer me a variety of tempos, a fast song here and there, a slow one here and there, a hymn, a traditional song, a new song, a secular song - I enjoy a good mix. And Mercy Me It's Christmas! delivers all of that. Sometimes I sing along quietly, sometimes I belt it out - I have really had fun with this one. (I am quite a good singer in my car. *wink*)

I really enjoy, "Go Tell It On The Mountain". It's always fun and Mercy Me's version is no exception. However, there is one star for me above all the other songs and carols on this album: Y'all, the arrangement of "O Come, O Come" is my favorite, ever. Not your traditional "O Come, O Come", it makes me have to think of the next line when set to a different tune. It is set to a folk tune that is used with the hymn, "The Gift of Love" that our youth choir sang when I was a teenager.

Pizza Ranch restaurants have a special version of the CD for sale with bonus songs on board. Buy $25 in gift cards and you'll get this CD free.

Songs:
1. Newborn
2. Christmastime Again
3. Sleigh Ride
4. I'll Be Home For Christmas
5. Hold On Christmas
6. A Holly Jolly Christmas
7. Go Tell It On The Mountain
8. Do You Hear What I Hear
9. Our Lullaby
10. Joy
11. O Come, O Come
12. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (Exclusive Bonus Track for Pizza Ranch)
13. O Holy Night (Exclusive Bonus Track for Pizza Ranch)
14. Silent Night (Exclusive Bonus Track for Pizza Ranch)
15. Joseph's Lullaby (Exclusive Bonus Track for Pizza Ranch)
Mercy Me It’s Christmas CD will be available in Pizza Ranch locations beginning November 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015.  It has 4 exclusive songs that can only be found on the CD version being sold by Pizza Ranch.  Each CD will be sold for $5 plus tax.  Pizza Ranch will give away the CD with a $25 gift card purchase as well as sell the full album at each of its 200 locations throughout the Midwest and Great Plains states.  "We are so excited to debut our new Christmas album, MercyMe, It’s Christmas, with Pizza Ranch” said Bart Millard with MercyMe. “Pizza Ranch is a fantastic restaurant with a great mission to glorify God. The Biggest Story, How the Snake Crusher Brings Us Back to the Garden

https://www.crossway.org/books/the-biggest-story-hccase/
"Of course, God still had his promises to keep. But most days it was hard to imagine how anyone could save this stubborn people.

It would have been even harder to imagine how the Promised Man could come from among this people."
If you read my blog, you know that teaching my daughter with autism about God is a very challenging task at my house. Stories during Sunday School and Vacation Bible School scared her. God isn't concrete and tangible, and that frightens her.

I am thankful that God keeps his promises even to children who don't understand Him.

I keep looking for resources to help bring Bible stories into content that my girl can understand. Long columns of letters, words, paragraphs are not our favorite medium.

We  were given an opportunity to review a book for children, The Biggest Story, How The Snake Crusher Brings Us Back to the Garden, and I raised my hand quickly for a copy. Anything with fun illustrations is inviting to my daughter, and if it is inviting, she spends time with it, and she gains new knowledge or at least new familiarity.

The images are delightful. Take a peek below (or at the promotional video):

I really appreciate Don Clark's illustrations. There is so much to look at!

I am impressed with author Kevin Deyoung's ability to condense a concept into just a few very powerful sentences. The summaries are fantastic for a kid with special learning needs!
"The second monarch, young David from Bethlehem, was definitely much better. In fact, before we get to the King, there's almost no one more important than King David.

When King David wasn't busy sinning (which he did in some really big ways), he was a good, wise, merciful king. May good things happened to God's people when David was in charge. They were victorious and prosperous and blessed."
There are so many concepts to find in the illustrations and talk about. This is a bonus for the homeschooling mom to a child with autism. The non-verbal information within the pages of this book is rich.

We haven't  had time with younger cousins since we got this book - when we do have time with them, "The Biggest Story" will be an excellent choice for my homeschooler to read aloud to her younger cousins. Reading aloud and co-teaching are wonderful ways to work on communication for a child with autism.

Many of you will read this book in one sitting although it can be read in sections for children whose attention span is short, the sections are short enough not to overwhelm.

Throughout the book, Deyoung reminds us again and again of God's wonderful promises:
"So  keep waiting for him. Keep believing in him. Keep trusting that the story isn't over yet. God's promises never fail and the Promised One never disappoints."
The hardback retails for $18 (it is discounted as I type at Amazon), is 132 pages, and is not too big for little hands and it has a silky fabric bookmark for saving your place.

If the powers that be are reading, I like the black text on the pages better than the white text.

Apologetics Study Bible for Students Review and Giveaway

http://www.apologeticsbible.com/

We got the opportunity to use and review a copy of Apologetics Study Bible For Student from a special needs perspective.

I have never hidden the fact that the idea of God is a difficult one for my child who is on the autism spectrum. Some of the stories in the Bible are scary, and that fear makes Sunday School and Bible study sometimes aversive for her. I continue to look for products that reduce her anxiety about God and church while increasing her understanding. I want her to have a confident faith, but she is concerned about why the king wanted to kill all of Esther's people or why the men nailed nails into Jesus's hands and feet. Separating now from history and figuring out who God is when He is invisible is a difficult concept for many children with autism.

My first favorite thing about the Apologetics Study Bible for Students are the index (reverse) tabs on the page edges that allow us to find books of the Bible quickly. My daughter has never owned a Bible with the books visually imprinted on the page edges.

Everything about the Apologetics Study Bible for Students is inviting. The version of this Bible that we were given to review is weighty and substantial and the cover is hardback and easier to handle than a soft, slippery, floppy leather cover for kids with motor challenges.
A Few Features of The Apologetics Study Bible for Students HCSB:
- Book Introductions for each of the sixty-six books of the Bible.
- Study Notes provide evidence of the reliability and truthfulness of Scripture.
- 120 Articles written by today's leading Christian thinkers dealing with life's ultimate questions.
- 60 Twisted Scriptures address ways that various religious movements distort Scripture to support doctrine contrary to historic Christian teaching.
The chapter introductions give us historical context and background information. The text is smaller than my girl is accustomed to, more words on a page, yet the layout on the pages is inviting enough that she will pick up the book and read from it to herself. (This is amazing!) The study notes (extra tiny) add more important context and explanation. The 120 articles addressed things we've all wondered about; for example, "How were people saved before Christ?".  Twisted scriptures also answer questions I've wondered about - why didn't Adam and Eve die the moment they bit the fruit from the forbidden tree?

My homeschooler is a big fan of archaeology and the Apologetics Study Bible for Students contains 50 Bone & Dirt features  that tell us about important archaeological discoveries and why they are important. Other features are 25 Tactics, to equip students to withstand opposition to Christianity by outlining tactics and strategies for handling frequently heard anti-Christian arguments; 20 Personal Stories of encouragement; 20 Top Five bullet points.

As part of the PR materials that arrived with the Apologetics Study Bible, I learned that, this summer, the gift of Confident Faith is being celebrated with 16 brand new, but energetic and brief videos featuring Sean McDowell, free resources like Bible studies and articles as well as wonderful specials on apps and Bibles.  There are new resources every week - a full 16 weeks of resources when it is all done. The videos are located here. They are short (under four minutes long) and to the point. They give me insight into how to answer questions - so if you find the material is too advanced for your student, you may choose to watch them and teach the material yourself.

The intro to each video is a bit bothersome to me for my child with special needs (but not for the typically developing sibs). Allow me to explain. One of my problems with Sunday School lessons for typically developing teens is the topics are sometimes not developmentally appropriate for my child with autism. She is not ready to talk in a group about topics like dating, sex, cheating at school (that doesn't apply to her), abortion. The intro to each video is the same, a piece featuring Sean McDowell, and he mentions the topics that are too advanced for my teen w autism. I am able to fast forward through the intro and begin each video without the intro. The videos are clearly labeled, so I can avoid the topics that my child is not yet ready for - I like that flexibility and control and those are things Sunday School can't give me.

You can purchase the Apologetics Study Bible here in a variety of covers and prices. You can enter here to win one - I have one copy to give away. Leave a blog comment by Friday to enter. I'll choose a winner at the end of the week (22-Aug-15). AND, if that weren't enough, a Confident Faith Sweepstakes is being offered to give away Bibles, free mini libraries of B&H's best apologetics resources and even a trip for two to the National Conference on Christian Apologetics (NCCA) being held October 16-17, 2015 in Charlotte, NC where some of the world's leading thinkers will offer insights and teaching. Enter sweepstakes here.

We are enjoying this resource - it is inviting enough its own that my reluctant reader does not have to be coaxed to read a little. I like that a LOT.

Patterns of Evidence -Exodus- Review & Giveaway

http://www.patternsofevidence.com/en/
My homeschooler, a teenager on the autism spectrum, has long had a fascination with all things Egypt. This special interest is one I have encouraged and fed along the years. Recently, she has become fascinated with the story of Moses in the Bible. As I allow her to chase her interests, I am fascinated to see how much other learning happens as it relates to Egypt.

When we received an opportunity to review the DVD "Patterns of Evidence -Exodus-" I hesitated. Yes, my child w/ an ASD is very visual, but she has auditory processing challenges. Information written for younger children is better understood by her. Would she watch a documentary? Would she absorb any information from it?

The answer at my house is a yes.

"Patterns of Evidence - Exodus-" is almost two hours long and we watched it in one sitting. If you have a child with special needs or with auditory processing challenges, please know that it contains a lot of spoken information and dialogue. In the first 10 minutes of the DVD, I thought we were going to have to break it into several short viewing sessions, but my girl wanted to push through and watch all of it.

She fascinates me - at times, she gives me evidence that she is absorbing much more than I think she is - and at other times, there is clearly less understanding happening - and it was no different with this DVD. I appreciate how the evidence is presented with an explanation of why that particular piece of evidence is important. I am never left wondering why a piece of info was included in the film - he systematically builds a case for the Exodus as a real event in history and he builds a case for where he believes it fits in time. Filmmaker Timothy Mahoney gives us big glimpses into how his mind works in the way he presents information, important for me as I continue to work with my child with autism on perspective taking.

I really enjoyed Patterns of Evidence - Exodus. Quite a bit of footage was shot in Egypt. The visuals are educational, informative, interesting. The filmmaker uses a several-layer visual timeline that keeps me grounded in the information being discussed - and when facts outside the Bible indicate that the events might fit withing history if shifted on the timeline - it makes sense to me. Mahoney puts together a detailed puzzle of history that draws me in. I appreciated the non-Biblical history presented alongside information from the Old Testament. The details from other non-Bible writers who documented events during the time surrounding the events of the Israelite exodus from Egypt makes the Bible stories deep and rich, it adds layers of context and meaning that I did not have before. I like that the producer of the DVD chose experts whose opinions differ - the presentation is not one sided and causes me to think and ponder.

I hope more Patterns of Evidence DVDs are produced. We will watch them. Having our first experience be about my child's special interest of Egypt creates a warm introduction and I suspect that daughter will be open to watching another and another.

We enjoyed the Patterns of Evidence - Exodus, DVD!

I have a DVD to give away! Leave a comment to enter and I will choose a winner, Thursday, August 6th, 2015.

Hello Fresh Review

"Cooking made easier for everyone!"

Hello Fresh is a service that provides home cooks with recipes and fresh ingredients. Hello Fresh buys the recipe ingredients and delivers them to your house.

Hello Fresh provides the recipes and ingredients; you provide the pots and pans and plates and utensils, you provide a few ingredients (olive oil and butter were two I used from my own pantry) and the cooking and the clean-up.You need basic skills to prepare the recipes, peeling, cutting, dicing, slicing, stirring. We used both the stovetop and the oven.

Shoppers order a week ahead and boxes arrive on Wednesdays. Shoppers choose each week between meals for two people or meals for four people and between a "classic box" option (with meat) and a "veggie" option for meals that can be prepared in 30 minutes or less.  Shoppers receive three meals for two or four people in a subscription service that can be paused or cancelled at any time (there is no contract, no minimum subscription length).

Setting up an account was straightforward. NOTE: Hello Fresh charges a dollar to your credit card or pay pal to ensure it is a working card and then donates that dollar to charity.

DISCLAIMER: I received this box for free in exchange for a review on this blog. I did have to pay a dollar to register on the Hello Fresh web site. I was not paid for this review and am not obligated to provide a positive review.

The box arrived on a Wednesday morning. I was not home; Fed Ex left it on my front steps. I like that I didn't have to be home to sign for it. (My homeschooler had a doctor's appointment for a Special Olympics physical that we'd scheduled several weeks before; I did not want to reschedule it to sign for a box, and was happy that I didn't have to.)
The freezer packs arrived still frozen and the box was well insulated. My husband and I are impressed with the packaging.

I was given three step-by-step picture recipe cards (here's one) and the ingredients to make each recipe. I do like the visual piece here-it is great for our kids with special learning needs. The cards are sturdy and stand up to drips and messy kitchen work.
This Sweet Potato Quinoa Bowl is the only recipe in our box that contained no allergens for my child with the long list of food sensitivities. I made it by myself. All of the ingredients were present and accounted for. (The lemon was hard and appeared dry/old. I would not have bought it. It did have plenty of flavorful juice inside, though.)
The directions were simple, straightforward, and I was able to follow them and make the dish with no problems. I liked not having to measure the quinoa. Just rinse it and go. Not having to measure ingredients is a time saver. I have to tell you that I was doubtful about that avocado - I figured it would be hard as a rock - but I was wrong -  it was perfectly ripe.
And it was delicious! We omitted the hot pepper and the dish was still spicy. My 16 year old, my husband and I all love this one, the garlicky parsley with the cool avocado alongside the sweet potato and quinoa is a winning combination. I loaded my fork with a little bit of everything in each bite to get all the flavors at once. While the dish was supposed to feed two people, it easily stretched to feed three of us and I felt filled for a long time. Six thumbs up from the three of us.

The other two dishes contained allergens and if I could have exchanged them for other recipes and ingredients I would have. Hello Fresh does not allow any substitutions on the veggie box. I would not choose or buy these two dishes/ingredients/recipes because there are too many allergens in the recipes. I am looking for recipes we can all eat together instead of my having to make separate meals for different people in  my house.

My 16 year old helped me make these two dishes, and we spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the pot of salted water was for in the tofu dish. The instructions were not clear and we were frustrated:

The owner of Hello Fresh is making changes to this card based on our questions about the directions, so this recipe will be clear in the future.

We made this recipe six days after our box arrived. The broccoli, the tomatoes, the garlic were all still lovely and fresh. Each ingredient is packaged separately and sealed. However, from an allergy standpoint, I don't know if the cashews came in contact with other food products during packaging. Our finished tofu dish contained several allergens (tofu, soy sauce, cashews and gluten in the veggie stock cube). It smelled wonderful, but we are not tofu eaters. The broccoli was good. We prefer rice cooked in water instead of a veggie stock cube.

The polenta-chick pea-tomato recipe card was easier to follow than the tofu recipe.

I love that Hello Fresh sent organic tomatoes!

We waited until Tuesday night to make this dish, six days after receiving the box. The basil was slimy - so we left it out of the recipe. All of the other ingredients - including the other fresh herbs - were perfect.

The finished product:

The recipe was easy to prepare and we had all of the ingredients in one place, quantities measured, everything ready to go. We'd never had polenta before and none of us liked it. Chick peas, onions, tomatoes are not our thing, a personal non-preference. One of my children is allergic to legumes, so chick peas are not something I'd cook with if I had a choice.

The short story: If you have no food allergies in your family and your family is adventurous in eating, you may appreciate Hello Fresh. If you're cooking around food allergies, Hello Fresh has too many challenges for our situation to recommend it to those with allergies or food intolerances. Study the web site, study the other reviews, decide if the service will work for your particular situation. Read what other reviewers had to say about Hello Fresh here: http://mosaicreviews.com/hello-fresh/

I know people who spend a week or two at a time at a condo or timeshare in Florida every year who cook some meals in the condo rather than eat in a restaurant every meal. I think a Hello Fresh box would be perfect for a vacation where you have access to a kitchen.

Please go here to read the experiences of other reviewers who cooked from other box choices.

My Experience

When I browsed the web site, my mind saw, "You choose what you like and we send you the ingredients" and "Cooking made easy for everyone!" and "Do you offer plans for people with special dietary requirements? While we don't offer specific dietary plans, because our ingredients are delivered to you in separate packets, if you have any specific dislikes you can simply omit or replace these ingredients from a recipe."and "But if there's a recipe you're just not sure about, you can choose another meal! Don't eat fish? Swap it for a beef recipe. Not a fan of coriander? You have options!"

I thought I had a winner.

A delivery service that sends you ingredients and recipes - right to your door. Substitutions for picky eaters and allergies?! Reality was different from the way I interpreted the web site. Hello Fresh is more like the school cafeteria when I was a kid- take it or leave it. I thought there would be more options and I feel misled by the web site. However, in fairness to Hello Fresh, please know that I studied the web site not as a typical home cook, but as a mother of a child with a very long list of food allergies and four picky eaters in the family. My filter is not the norm.

Unfortunately, the week assigned to me was full of menu items I would not choose to buy or make on my own. The web site says all ingredients are packaged separately so shoppers may omit ingredients they don't like or are allergic to, but how do you omit chick peas from a chick pea dish? How do you omit soy from a tofu dish? For my review box, both the classic box ($69) and veggie box ($59) choices were incredibly allergen heavy: Shrimp. Gluten. Cashews. Soy. Dairy (sour cream). Legumes. The ingredients we need to omit (because they are allergens) are critical to the success of the recipes.

The vegetable stock cube arrived unlabeled and I went to Hello Fresh for ingredients. It contains wheat, an allergen and MSG, something we try to avoid (an excitotoxin). Hello Fresh suggested I make my own stock in place of the cube next time.

I asked Hello Fresh about packaging. Are the nuts packaged in a separate area? The answer: "...we cannot guarantee 100% non-cross contamination although the nuts are packaged separately. For anyone with a very serious nut allergy we would sadly not advise them using our product."

The web site says substitutions are allowed in the ordering process. I spent some time trying to decide which recipes that I disliked the least - and it was a tie. (Please read other reviews as other reviewers are assigned to different weeks and had different recipe choices. Perhaps I was assigned the only week of recipes so unfriendly to those with food allergies.) I used the eeenie-meenie-miny-moe method to choose the veggie box - and entered my ordering information only to be told that no substitutions are allowed. I learned the hard way that substitutions are allowed on the classic box but not the veggie box. That information is in the FAQ. I missed that important information in my hurry to order during a chaotic week where I was preparing to leave with my daughter's band Bands of America Grand Nationals, a three-day, 91 band marching competition. Don't study the web site in a hurry like I did.

I thought I'd be able to substitute quinoa or rice for pasta in a dish to make it gluten free, or to remove shrimp and add tilapia to a recipe. Hello Fresh does not allow shoppers to do that.  In the classic box (with meat), from what I understand, there are three main recipe choices with two alternate choices and shoppers may choose from any three of them, and that is what Hello Fresh means when the company says that substitutions are allowed.

BOTTOM LINE: If your family is not picky and if you have no major food allergies in your family, you might love Hello Fresh. The registration and ordering processes were easy; stopping your subscription is easy. The box arrives at your front door without needing a signature and you didn't have to shop for ingredients. The ingredients arrive pre-measured, separately packaged,, well insulated with big freezer packs and are well organized within the box and are packed in a way to take up minimal space in the refrigerator. The recipes are creative, yet brief in terms of preparation time; the ingredients are (for the most part) fresh (we waited six days to make two of the recipes with all ingredients but one still fresh), and $10 per person per meal is reasonable, in my opinion, for a restaurant quality meal at home. You'd pay more than $10 per person for these meals at a restaurant and you might wait longer at a restaurant than the recipes take to make at home. You do have to wash the dishes but  you don't have to leave a tip. ;)
