MSU researcher advocates new way to treat autism

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Children with autism would likely receive better treatment if supporters of the two major teaching methods stopped bickering over theory and focused on a combined approach, a Michigan State University psychologist argues in a new paper.

This combined curriculum sounds good. It's what so many of us are trying to do on our own: balance the aba/play. Man, it would make it easier if everyone was on the same team! Can't we all just get along??!!

Developmental needs to be the backbone, the framework, with developmentally appropriate behavioral pieces. Behaviorists don't understand development, and that created problems for us.

I am uncomfortable with behavioristic ideas because they flow out of a materialistic, atheistic worldview. I fully understand that Christians do ABA and I respect their decision. When I read the writings of B. F. Skinner, I get the willies and the developmental philosophy lines up much better with my educational philosophy (Charlotte Mason). I know I'm biased, and I freely admit it!
