This is something I would like high schools to adopt. My dad was director of spec. ed in our school district and we were not allowed to use that word as a noun, although it could be used as an adjective because "developmentally disabled" wasn't used at the time. I was incensed by my nephew and son's FB entries using that word and just laid into them. It is not a word used in our house, but they were quoting a movie and using it as a noun. When I'm in middle and high schools I hear it way too often and call kids on it, each time. They look at me like I am crazy for threatening to write them up if I hear it again. If I COULD write them up and the admin would give a CONSEQUENCE, then I would the first time.
I would like to get rid of the word special ed. also. Check out the new DMS - 5 that will be out about May 2013. On one hand, some changes I think are needed but the R word comes back.
